Current Information:

The Australian Submarine AE1 was lost with all hands on 14th September, 1914, whilst taking part in the occupation of German New Guinea by the Australians. Her fate is unknown after she was sent to patrol in St. George’s Channel between New Britain and New Ireland. It was suggested that she hit a coral reef but a subsequent search of the area found nothing and the submarine was officially declared lost on 19th September. Thomas Besant was the commander of the vessel.
